Icons in use

When to use icons

Icons can be used in various contexts. The 16px and 20px sizes are commonly applied in user interfaces to improve usability. The 48px large icons are suited for enhancing slide decks or static PDF reports and work more as pictograms.

Icons should be used sparingly but consistently. Labels are often just as informative, but an icon can complement the interaction. If a label is replaced with an icon, a tooltip displaying the label must be provided on hover.

Use new icons

Please walk through the following steps when you plan to introduce new icons or add new sizes of existing icons our products.

1. Check existing icons

   Check if one of the icons that are already in use is suitable for your needs. If you’re unsure feel free to reach out in the #ask-dataviz slack channel

2. Request new icon

   Put an icon request to the #ask-dataviz slack channel with the context in which it’s used.
